Cancer - Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal
cells in the body. Cancer develops when the body’s normal control mechanism
stops working. Old cells do not die and instead grow out of control, forming
new, abnormal cells.
These extra cells may form a mass of tissue, called a
tumor. Some cancers, such asleukemia, do not form tumors.
Treatment options depend on the type of cancer, its stage, if the cancer has spread and your general health. The goal of treatment is to kill as many cancerous cells while reducing damage to normal cells nearby. Advances in technology make this possible.
Mouth cancer is any cancerous tissue
growth located in the oral cavity It may arise as a primary lesion
originating in any of the tissues in the mouth, by metastasis from a distant
site of origin, or by extension from a neighboring anatomic structure, such
as the nasal cavity.
Alternatively, the oral cancers may originate in any of
the tissues of the mouth, and may be of varied histologic types: teratoma,
adenocarcinoma derived from a major or minor salivary gland, lymphoma from
tonsillar or other lymphoid tissue, or melanoma from the pigment-producing
cells of the oral mucosa.
There are several types of oral cancers, but around
90% are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the tissues that line the
mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.
It
may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), lips,
or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the
microscope and are called squamous cell carcinoma, but less commonly other
types of oral cancer occur, such as Kaposi's sarcoma.
Lung cancer, also known as carcinoma
of the lung or pulmonary carcinoma, is a malignant lung tumor characterized
by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. Lung cancer are due to
long-term exposure to tobacco smoke About 10–15% of cases occur in people,
who have never smoked. These cases are often caused by a combination of
genetic factors and exposure toradon gas, asbestos, or other forms of air
pollution, including second-hand smoke.
For management of cancer patients
especially Asian countries largely embraced with allopathic medicine.
Depending upon the stages of cancer, treatment modalities most commonly used
(radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy). However, disadvantage of these
therapies causes permanent or temporary adverse effects such as loss of hair,
loss of appetite, nerve damage, vomiting and nausea etc.
An integrated
approach is needed to manage cancer using the growing body of knowleged
gained through scientific development. Thousands of herbal and traditional
compounds are being screened worldwide to validate their use as
anti-cancerous drugs.
Adult stem cells, undifferentiated and adaptable, are able
to transform into the cells of countless organs and structures within the human
body.
Many therapies use stem cells as they can restore damaged structures and
rejuvenate failing cells very effectively. Stem cell science has seen
considerable advancements in the last few years with many new developments and
discoveries being made.
